Hi Parents,
Well, it seems as if spring has finally arrived and the snow is going to melt. We sent home all of your child's winter gear on Wednesday in hopes that it can stay home for the remainder of the year.
After spring break, we will be starting a new inquiry unit on Wisconsin birds. We think that the kids will fall in love with birds like they fell in love with whales. If you are an avid bird watcher and want to share your love with the class, let us know. We would love to for you to come in. Also, if you have some bird books that we can borrow for the month of April, send them in.
Also in April, we will be celebrating Earth day with a tree planting ceremony open to the parents on April 26th at 1:30. You will be able to see all of our hard work learning about birds on that day. Leading up to Earth Day, we will be creating fun projects with recycled materials. We are in need of packing peanuts. If you have some, let us know through email.
In math, we will begin a unit on time, measurement and money. Please take time to talk about these topics at home.
MAPS testing begins in April. We will send home a reminder when we get closer to your child's actual testing date. It will be important for your child to get a good night's sleep and to eat a good breakfast on those days. We want your child to do his/her very best.
Have a wonderful spring break.
Mrs. G, Mrs. K and Miss S.

We got to make Easter eggs. We made them because April is coming up. April 1st is April Fools Day. Easter is around the corner. We colored the eggs with two colors. We had to think about patterns and colors. We had to cut them out and glue them to a piece of paper. We had to make it look like a gameboard. It's not like a black and white gameboard. We had to pick Easter egg colors. Gavin said, "I like the Easter egg."

We went to a concert. Alyssa's cousin was on the stage. Lizzie's brother danced in a funny dance. Zachary's sister was on the stage. Our friends were on the stage. They sang a song about pizza. One song was the yodeling song. He was interrupted by Vader, Sponge Bob and Bugs Bunny. They sang Sir Duke. Jasmine's brother was on the stage singing the pizza song. Kamahdi's sister was on the stage. She had a speaking part. Aubrey's brother was on the stage. All the songs were super awesome. Alyssa said,"I loved the concert".

Experimenting with Magnets
Aryana said, "It was awesome learning about magnets".
We learned how magnets stick together and how they don't. North and south ends of a mangnet stick together.
The magnets were floating. There is an invisable force.
We built a tripod with a swinging arm that pushed and pulled towards the magnets.
Sort objects using a magnet.
The magnet in the middle moves toward the other magnets. It was attracted to the other magnets.
We used a magnet on a pole to get fish with paper clips on them. Magnets work in water.
Magnets moved metal (iron shavings) under plastic. Creating pictures with magnets.

Spring?
The snow is starting to melt but we still have a lot of snow. It is really wet snow and the kids are coming in from recess really wet. It would be a good idea to send an extra pair of socks to school.
Our next inquiry unit focus is magnets. We are going to do experiments to discover new learning about this fun science topic.
In math, the students are beginning a "bubble gum" challenge. The kindergartners are counting and the first graders are learning their addition facts. When they reach a goal, they put a gumball sticker on their gumball machine. You will be able to see their progress at open house.
Open house has been rescheduled for Monday, March 18th. We are hopeful that everyone can make it. Your child has a lot to share with you.
Have a great weekend.

Snow Day - Yeah!
We had our first snow day this week. The kids came back and seemed really excited about their day off. We made a graph and were surprised that there were 4 kids that didn't like having a snow day. They missed their friends.
Your child might mention something called "dojo". It is a online and ipad program that tracks a child's behavior throughout the day. Students earn points for good behavior and lose points for making poor choices. The top 5 point earners got to pick a prize left over from our Valentine's bingo. We won't give out prizes everyday. We are thinking that it would be a good Friday thing. So far the students seem motivated by this program. The other great part is that parents are able to access their child's account. We will be providing your child's code when you come to open house or through email if we don't see you then.
Next week will be very busy. The entire school is celebrating "Read Across America" and Dr. Seuss' birthday. We will be reading a lot of books in class. If you would like to come in and read to the class, let us know. On Wednesday, your child may wear pajamas to school and on Thursday, your child may wear a hat.
Our Open House is on Tuesday from 4:30-7:30. Please let us know if you cannot attend so that we can set up a conference if needed.
